AI that answers your Instagram DMs from a brief you write

, Founder, ReelDropPublished

Yes, AI can reply to your Instagram DMs. In ReelDrop it is called DM reply by AI: you write a brief once (what the conversation is for, the facts it may use, when to stop, and the link to send) and it answers the questions people DM you from that brief. It stays quiet on a plain hi, hands over after 10 replies to one person, and runs on the official Instagram API. It is on the Creator plan only, at $29 a month, with 2,000 AI replies per 30 days.

  • ReelDrop DM reply by AI builder with the goal, the context and the Guardrails section filled in, beside a phone preview
Step 2: the goal, the facts it may use, and the guardrails.
  • ReelDrop Review step with the live preview phone answering a test question from the brief
The Review step: talk to it in the phone before it goes live. Nothing reaches Instagram.

Write the brief once

Pick DM reply by AI as the trigger. There is no post to pick and no keyword to match: it answers anyone who DMs your account, story replies included. Then fill in the brief.

  • Tell AI what to do: the goal, such as answer questions about the course and send the enrolment link.
  • Give AI context: everything it is allowed to know, such as prices, hours, what is in stock and what you do not do. It is told to use only these facts and to say it does not have a detail rather than guess one.
  • Stop when: the point where the conversation is done, such as they have the link or they ask for a human.
  • Tone: friendly, professional, playful or concise.
  • Main link to lead with: the one link it sends when someone is ready to buy, book or sign up.

It answers questions, not every hello

Only reply to questions is on by default. Until the AI has answered someone, a word filter and then the AI itself skip messages that are not asking anything: a hi, a thanks, an emoji, a compliment, a sales or collab pitch, spam. When it is unsure, it answers. A skipped message gets no reply, uses none of your allowance, and stays in your inbox like any other DM.

Once it has answered someone, it answers everything they send after that. Turn the switch off and it replies to every DM. It runs alongside your keyword DM automations rather than instead of them, so a DM that matches a keyword gets that automation's message and an AI reply.

The three messages you write yourself

Three short messages are yours, word for word, up to 500 characters each.

  • First message: off by default. Sent once, just before the AI's first reply. Meta recommends telling people they are talking to an automated assistant, and this is where you do it.
  • When it stops: the handoff, sent when the AI reaches its limit for that person. ReelDrop does not alert you separately when it goes out, so write it to say honestly what happens next.
  • If AI can't reply: the fallback, sent if the AI fails or takes too long, so nobody is left on read.

Limits per person and per account, and why

The AI sends at most 10 replies to one person in a sitting. After that it sends your handoff message on their next DM and goes quiet. A sitting ends after 24 hours of silence, so someone who comes back tomorrow with a new question gets answered. Over all time it sends at most 40 replies to one person, then hands over for good.

Each workspace on Creator gets 2,000 AI replies per 30 days. Only replies that reach someone count: skipped messages, failed replies and tests in the builder do not. If the allowance runs out, the AI sends your handoff message at most once a day per person and picks up again when the 30 days roll over.

The caps are the builder's own reasoning: long enough for a real question, short enough that nobody is stuck talking to a bot. A conversation that needs more than that is one you should be having yourself.

The AI may send the main link and any link you wrote into the context, and nothing else. With no links anywhere, it sends none rather than invent one. That rule is part of its instructions, and ReelDrop also checks every reply against the list: a reply carrying any other link still goes out, and is counted as an off-list link on the automation's card, so you can see if it ever happens and fix the brief.

Talk to it before it goes live

On the Review step the phone on the right is live. Type a message the way a follower would, and the AI answers from your brief with the same engine it uses on Instagram. Nothing you send there reaches Instagram, and testing does not use any of your 2,000 replies. The phone also tells you when the AI would stay quiet or decide it is done, so you see the skipped messages too, not only the answers.

Write the context with ChatGPT or Claude

The context box is the part people find hardest to fill. Open Write my context with AI in the builder and click Copy prompt. Paste it into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini and it interviews you one topic at a time: what you do, what you sell and what it costs, the questions people ask with the exact answers, what you never promise, how you write, and your links. It is told never to guess, so anything you skip comes back marked not covered instead of as an invented price. Paste the result into the context box.

Stop it for one person, or take a thread over

To keep the AI out of one conversation, open it in the ReelDrop inbox and choose Exclude from ReelDrop… from the row's menu or the Details panel, with No AI replies switched on. You can also add someone by username under Settings → DM privacy, before they have ever messaged you. Excluding someone deletes what the AI remembered about them.

Replying to someone yourself does not pause the AI. If you want to take a thread over, exclude the person first; muting the thread does not stop the AI either. To stop it for everyone, pause the automation.

It remembers a conversation for 30 days after the person's last message, so a follow-up question a week later has the earlier messages behind it. Deleting the automation deletes its conversations.

If you leave the Creator plan

Move to Influencer or Starter and the AI automation pauses, and you get an email saying so. Nobody in your DMs is told anything about your plan. If you come back to Creator, the automation stays paused until you turn it back on, so it never restarts behind your back.

Safety and Meta's rules

DM reply by AI runs on the official Instagram API, the same connection as every other ReelDrop automation. It only ever replies straight after someone messages you, inside Instagram's 24-hour messaging window, so it cannot start a conversation or message anyone cold. Replies are kept under Instagram's 1,000-character limit.

It will not claim to be a human, ask for a password or a card number, or promise an action it cannot take, such as a refund or a booking. Instructions someone types into the chat cannot change its brief. Instagram's own sending limits apply on top of ReelDrop's.

The coach whose DMs are the same five questions

A sleep coach gets the same questions every week: how much is it, what is included, how long does it take, do you work with toddlers, how do I book. Her context lists the prices, the programme, the ages she works with and the booking link, and says she does not give medical advice. The AI answers those questions and sends the booking link once someone is ready. A question about medication gets the line from her context that she does not give medical advice, rather than an answer she would never give.

A small shop with stock and shipping questions

A ceramics shop restocks on the first of each month. The context has the sizes, the glazes in stock, shipping times by country and the returns policy, and the main link is the shop. Do you ship to Canada and is the blue one back gets an answer at 2am. When the stock changes, she edits the context, and every conversation after that uses the new facts.

Every trigger by plan

Starter is a real free plan rather than a trial, but it is deliberately one trigger type: a comment on a post or Reel, on up to five active automations. Everything else in the builder unlocks at Influencer.

Frequently asked questions

Can AI reply to my Instagram DMs?

Yes. ReelDrop's DM reply by AI answers the questions people send you in Instagram DMs, from a brief you write: a goal, the facts it may use, when to stop and one link. It runs on the official Instagram API and is on the Creator plan, with 2,000 AI replies per 30 days.

Will it reply to every message?

Not by default. With Only reply to questions on, it skips greetings, thanks, emoji, compliments, pitches and spam until someone actually asks something, and once it has answered a person it answers everything they send. Turn the switch off and it replies to every DM.

What does it do when it does not know the answer?

It says it does not have that detail and points the person to whatever contact your context gives. It is told never to invent a price, a date, availability, a policy, a discount code or a person's name, and not to promise that someone will follow up unless your context says so.

Does it stop when I reply to someone myself?

No. Replying yourself does not pause the AI. To take a conversation over, exclude the person from AI replies in the ReelDrop inbox, or under Settings → DM privacy. Pause the automation to stop it for everyone.

What counts toward the 2,000 replies?

Only AI-written replies that reach someone. Skipped messages, failed replies and tests in the builder's preview phone use none. The 2,000 is per workspace, over a rolling 30 days that starts with the first reply after the previous window ends.

Can it message people who have not messaged me?

No. It only replies straight after someone DMs you or replies to your story, inside Instagram's 24-hour messaging window. It never starts a conversation.

Which plan includes DM reply by AI?

Creator only, at $29 a month, or founding pricing at $149 a year or $249 once. On Starter and Influencer, automations send a message you wrote, on a trigger you chose; Influencer is $9.99 a month.
