Instagram statistics for Canada (2026)
Updated:
Meta's advertising tools showed an Instagram ad audience of 21.0 million in Canada in late 2025, about 51% of Statistics Canada's January 2026 population estimate (our calculation). That counts accounts advertisers can reach, not unique people. Every figure here names its primary source and the date we checked it, and figures we couldn't trace are listed as excluded.
Instagram's reach in Canada
Meta doesn't publish a count of Instagram users in Canada. The closest primary figure is the audience Meta's own advertising tools report, collected in DataReportal's Digital 2026: Canada report by Kepios. It counts accounts advertisers can reach, not unique people or monthly active users.
Meta's gender split for the adult ad audience, 53.5% female and 44.5% male, adds up to 98%. Meta's audience figures don't always sum to 100%.
The share of the population is our own calculation, using Statistics Canada's population estimate for January 1, 2026.

How Canadians use social media and short video
Statistics Canada's Canadian Internet Use Survey measures social networking in general, not Instagram. Its latest cycle is 2022, so there is no official Canadian figure for 2025 or 2026 yet. The figure for all Canadians aged 15 and older comes from the 2020 cycle.
The Media Technology Monitor's 72% covers short-form video on Instagram, YouTube and TikTok combined, among online Canadians, so it isn't an Instagram number either.
| Statistic | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Canadians aged 15 to 24 who used social networking sites | 91% (2022) | Statistics Canada, Young people and exposure to harmful online content in 2022 (Canadian Internet Use Survey 2022) |
| Canadians aged 65 and older who used social networking sites | 43.5% (2022) | Statistics Canada, StatCan Plus, Canadian seniors more connected than ever (Canadian Internet Use Survey 2022) |

Phones and mobile plans
These figures describe the devices Instagram runs on. The CRTC counts subscriptions, not people, so one person can hold more than one subscription, and the CRTC publishes no Instagram figures.
| Statistic | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Canadians 15+ who relied on a smartphone for personal use | 84% (2020) | Statistics Canada, The Daily, Canadian Internet Use Survey, 2020 |
| Canadians 15+ with a mobile data plan | 84% (2022) | Statistics Canada, The Daily, Canadian Internet Use Survey, 2022 |
| Retail mobile phone subscribers | 37.7 million (2024), up from 37.0 million (2023) | CRTC, Canadian Telecommunications Market Report 2026, Figure 34 |

How many content creators are in Canada?
There is no official count. No Government of Canada source counts social media content creators. Statistics Canada's closest measure found 468,000 Canadians aged 15 to 69 (1.7%) did paid work through digital platforms in December 2023, or 927,000 (3.3%) under a broader definition. Platform work includes far more than content creation, so neither figure is a creator count.

Meta's quarterly reporting gives the global picture. Mark Zuckerberg said on Meta's July 29, 2026 earnings call that "Instagram reached 2 billion daily actives". On the October 29, 2025 call, Meta put Instagram at 3 billion monthly actives. Daily and monthly figures measure different things, so the two don't contradict each other.
| Statistic | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram daily active users, worldwide | 2 billion | Meta, Q2 2026 earnings call transcript (Mark Zuckerberg) |
| Daily active people across all Meta apps | 3.60 billion (June 2026 average, +3% year over year) | Meta, Second Quarter 2026 Results press release |

Numbers we left out, and why
These figures circulate in roundup articles, but we couldn't trace them to Meta, Statistics Canada, the CRTC or MTM, or they're out of date.
- Any Instagram age breakdown for Canada. No primary source publishes one; the versions in circulation repackage third-party estimates.
- Gender splits other than Meta's 53.5% female and 44.5% male.
- "Instagram has 2 billion monthly users." That figure dates from 2022. Meta's latest is 2 billion daily actives.
- Time spent on Instagram, such as "9.4 hours a month", and "the most-used platform for 53%". These come from GWI and Sensor Tower panels, reported through roundups.
- Ad and shopping engagement figures such as 27% and 43%.
- Any count of Canadian content creators in the millions. No official count exists.
- "33 million Canadians use Instagram." That number counts social media user identities across all platforms.
- Statistics Canada rates presented as 2025 or 2026. The newest Canadian Internet Use Survey cycle is 2022.
How we source and update these figures
We use primary sources only: Meta, Statistics Canada, the CRTC and the Media Technology Monitor. Aggregator roundups are excluded. Every row names its publisher, the source list gives each publication date and link, and we checked each one on 2026-09-10.
Next re-checks: Statistics Canada's July 1, 2026 population estimate, expected in late September 2026, which will update the population row and our calculation, and DataReportal's next Canada report.
How to cite this page: for any figure, cite the primary source named in its row, with its publication date. For the computed share of the population, cite ReelDrop, "Instagram statistics for Canada (2026)", updated September 2026.
