Why US best-time charts mislead Canadian accounts

Many best-time charts are published in "EST" or built mostly from US accounts. Buffer's study reports its windows in each account's local time, but charts that repackage it often quote a single Eastern time. Read literally, a "noon ET" chart tells a Vancouver creator to post at 9 a.m. in summer (10 a.m. in winter).

A national Canadian audience also isn't in one zone. St. John's and Vancouver are 4.5 hours apart in summer, and Saskatchewan and B.C. don't follow the same clock rules as the rest of the country. Peak windows by Canadian time zone

Buffer's 2026 data puts the strongest general windows at Wednesday at noon, Wednesday at 6 p.m. and Thursday at 9 a.m., in local time. The table shows each zone's offset and what 6 p.m. on a Wednesday in that zone is on a Toronto clock, which is what you'll see if you schedule everything from Eastern time.

If you post on Eastern time for a national audience

Scheduling every post for an Eastern window is common, and it's fine if most of your followers are in Ontario and Quebec. The table shows where each Eastern window lands in the other zones. Where summer and winter differ, both are given.

The evening Eastern window reaches the West in the afternoon. Many creators run two slots instead: 6 p.m. ET and 6 p.m. PT, which is 9 p.m. ET in summer and 8 p.m. ET from November 1, 2026.

B.C.'s permanent daylight time, from November 1, 2026

B.C. won't fall back this year. When most of Canada turns its clocks back on November 1, 2026, B.C. stays on daylight time and Pacific time becomes UTC−7 year-round. The Toronto to Vancouver gap drops to 2 hours from November 1, 2026 to March 14, 2027, then returns to 3 hours when Eastern time springs forward.

Saskatchewan already works this way. The National Research Council says most of the province uses Central Standard Time all year, and Yukon has been on UTC−7 year-round since 2020.

In practice, open any post scheduled for after November 1 in a Vancouver time zone and confirm it shows the time you expect. A recurring 9 p.m. ET slot meant to catch Vancouver at 6 p.m. has to move to 8 p.m. ET for the winter.

One city or the whole country

A local business should post in its customers' local time and ignore the rest of the map. A café in Toronto's Leslieville posts on Eastern time, and a salon in Calgary's Kensington posts on Mountain time.

Creators with a national audience should check the top cities in Instagram's audience insights before picking a zone. Ontario and Quebec, both mostly on Eastern time, are Canada's two most populous provinces, with 16,103,890 and 9,016,222 people on April 1, 2026 (Statistics Canada, The Daily, June 17, 2026), which is why Eastern is the usual anchor for a national audience. If your insights show a large Western following, add a second slot at the same local hour in Pacific time rather than splitting the difference.
