Captions and hashtags for the post you are actually making

Updated: September 2026

ReelDrop writes three caption options for each post, labeled with tone and character count, and suggests hashtags for that specific post rather than the block you saved in January. You pick one, adjust it, and schedule. The free Starter tier includes three AI caption generations a month; the Creator plan is unlimited. The captions are drafts, and good ones.

Start from your actual post

Upload your media in the composer and ask for captions. The suggestions are generated for the post in front of you, not pulled from a generic caption bank, which is the difference between a caption that mentions what is on screen and one that could sit under anything.

That order matters for hashtags too. Hashtags depend on what the post is, so they come after the media and the caption rather than before.

Pick from three options

Each suggestion shows its tone and character count, so you can tell at a glance which one fits before you read all three. Character count is doing quiet work there: Instagram truncates the caption in the feed, and a suggestion that runs past the fold reads differently from one that does not.

Tone matching, which will score each option against your usual voice, is on the roadmap. Until it ships, the tone label is the signal.

None of them right? Regenerate and get three more. On Starter each generation counts against the three a month, so heavy use is what the Creator plan is for.

Hashtag suggestions matched to the post

Open the hashtag field in the composer and ReelDrop suggests tags for the post you are working on. Keep the ones that fit, delete the rest, add your own. The final set is yours and it publishes with the post through the official API.

The suggestions are not a saved list. A ceramics studio that used to paste the same 25 tags under every post, glaze video or kiln disaster, gets kiln tags on the kiln post. It is a small change, and the whole benefit is that the tags finally describe the post they sit under.

ReelDrop caps the suggested selection at three on generated carousels on purpose. Thirty tags under a post reads as desperate and does not appear to work anyway. If you want the tags out of the caption entirely, schedule them as the first comment instead: that is part of the scheduler.

For research rather than per-post suggestions, the free niche hashtag finder gives you a mix of small, mid and large tags for a niche without an account, and the free hashtag density checker flags a caption that is drowning in them.

Edit and schedule

Selecting a caption drops it into the composer as plain text, where you edit it like anything you typed yourself: rewrite the hook, cut half of it, keep one line. Then schedule the post as usual and it publishes through the official Instagram API at the time you set.

Beating the caption bottleneck

A travel creator can edit a reel in 20 minutes but stalls on captions for twice that. With three starting points per post, she picks the closest, swaps two sentences, and moves on to the next upload. The writing time drops to minutes, and the posts that used to sit in drafts because the caption was not written go out on schedule.

A voice that has to stay flat

A creator whose whole brand is deadpan one-liners cannot post captions with three exclamation marks in them. The tone label is what she reads first: she picks the driest of the three, cuts the enthusiasm out of the one line that has it, and posts. Editing one line beats rewriting a whole caption from someone else's register.

Captions and tags in one pass

A small skincare brand batches eight posts on a Monday. For each one: upload, generate captions, pick, trim, take the four hashtag suggestions that match the product and drop the two that are about skincare in general. The whole batch takes about forty minutes, most of it spent choosing photos.

Frequently asked questions

How many AI captions do I get for free?

The free Starter tier includes 3 AI caption generations a month. Influencer includes the same 3; the Creator plan makes captions and hashtag suggestions unlimited.

Can I edit the generated captions?

Yes. Picking a suggestion puts it in the caption field as plain text. Edit it, add to it, or delete half of it.

Will the captions sound like me?

Each suggestion carries a tone label so you can start from the closest register, and you always get the final edit. Nothing publishes that you have not read.

What if all three suggestions miss?

Regenerate. You get a fresh set of three. On Starter and Influencer each generation counts toward the 3 monthly captions, so the Creator plan suits heavy use.

Are the hashtag suggestions the same for every post?

No. They are generated for the specific post you are composing. A static list treats every post as the same post, which is exactly the habit this replaces.

How many hashtags should I use?

Five at most. You can add more, but Instagram only counts 5 hashtags per post, so extra tags are wasted. The free hashtag density checker will tell you if a caption is carrying too many.

Can I keep hashtags out of the caption?

Yes. Schedule them as the post's first comment instead. The comment publishes at the same moment as the post, so the caption stays readable and the tags still go out. First-comment scheduling is on the Influencer and Creator plans.

Is there a free way to research hashtags?

Yes. The free niche hashtag finder gives you a mix of small, mid and large tags for your niche, no account needed.
