Instagram trial reels: test a reel on non-followers first
Piyush Sachdeva, Founder, ReelDropPublished
A trial reel is shown to people who don't follow you before your followers see it, so you can test a hook without spending it on your own audience. ReelDrop publishes or schedules trial reels through the official Instagram API, lets you choose whether you or Instagram decides when it reaches your followers, and tracks each one for 7 days on a reach and views curve. The free Starter plan includes 3 trial reels a month; Influencer and Creator are unlimited.

What is an Instagram trial reel?
Instagram added trial reels so creators could try an idea on strangers first. A trial reel goes to non-followers in Reels and Explore, it does not appear on your profile grid, and your followers don't see it until it is shared to them. If the reel flops, your audience never saw it. If it works, you share it and it carries on as a normal reel with the views it already has.
Meta's Content Publishing API supports trial reels with one setting on the reel: how it should graduate to followers. ReelDrop uses that setting and nothing else, so a trial published from ReelDrop is the same trial you would get from the Instagram app.
Who can post trial reels?
Instagram decides that, not ReelDrop. Apps can only publish for professional accounts (Business or Creator) connected through Meta's API, and on top of that Instagram only turns trial reels on for accounts it considers eligible. Its Help Center sets the conditions, including a follower minimum and a public account that is allowed to appear in recommendations, and Instagram has changed them more than once.
If Instagram hasn't turned trials on for your account, the reel is refused at publish time and ReelDrop tells you so in plain words: "Instagram hasn't enabled trial reels for this account yet." You can post it as a regular reel instead and try a trial again later.
Publish a trial reel now or schedule it
Trial reels use the same composer as every other reel. Upload the video, pick a cover, write the caption, and switch on "Post as trial reel". From there you can press "Publish now" or schedule it for a time slot like any other post, and it shows on the calendar in the trial reel colour.
The composer also shows how many trials you have left this month on the free plan, so you don't find out at publish time.
Two ways to graduate a trial reel
When the trial switch is on, the composer asks "When should it reach your followers?" and gives the two options Instagram's API offers.
- "I'll decide" (manual). The reel stays with non-followers until you share it to followers yourself from the Instagram app. Instagram's API has no call that lets an app do this step, so ReelDrop gives you a "Share to followers in Instagram" link on the reel's card instead of pretending it can press the button for you.
- "Let Instagram decide" (automatic on performance). Instagram shares the reel to your followers on its own if it does well with non-followers. Instagram doesn't publish the exact rule. What it does say is that it judges how the reel performs with non-followers in its first 72 hours.
Trial reel analytics: the 7-day curve
Instagram's API gives apps no trial-specific insights and no flag that says a trial has been shared to followers. So ReelDrop samples each trial reel's normal insights on its own schedule for 7 days after publish: on every sweep for the first 6 hours, hourly until 48 hours, then every 6 hours. Each sample records views, reach, likes, comments, shares, saves and your follower count at that moment.
The Trial Reels tab in Analytics turns those samples into a views and reach curve against hours since publish, with views at 24 and 72 hours, engagement rate and shares. Your follower count is stored next to each point as a baseline. When reach jumps by half or more between two samples, the card says "likely shared to followers" and shows how many hours after publish it happened. That jump is the best signal available, and we label it as a signal rather than a fact because Instagram doesn't report graduation directly.
Trial reels and comment-to-DM automations
A trial reel is a reel, so comment-to-DM automations work on it the same way. Attach the automation while you schedule the trial, in the Attach automation card, and it is live from the moment the reel publishes. Strangers who comment your keyword get the DM, which makes a trial a cheap way to test a lead magnet before you put it in front of your followers.
Set up the automation first, then attach it when you schedule the trial.
Comment-to-DMSchedule trial reels from Claude
ReelDrop's MCP server lets Claude, ChatGPT and other assistants schedule reels for you. The schedule_reel tool takes trial_reel set to true and trial_graduation set to MANUAL or SS_PERFORMANCE, so "schedule this as a trial reel for Thursday 7pm and let Instagram decide" is a normal request. get_trial_reel_analytics returns the same sampled curve the Analytics tab shows, so you can ask which of last month's trials took off. MCP access is on Influencer and Creator.
Connect an assistant once and schedule from chat.
ReelDrop MCPTesting two hooks for the same video
A fitness coach cuts the same tutorial with two different opening lines. She posts the first as a trial on Monday and the second on Wednesday, both on "I'll decide". By Friday the 24-hour views on the two cards tell her which hook held strangers, and she shares that one to followers from the Instagram app.
Posting outside your usual niche
A food creator wants to try a travel reel without confusing followers who came for recipes. A trial shows it only to non-followers. If the curve stays flat, nothing changes on the profile and the main audience never saw it.
Checking a lead magnet before launch
A course seller attaches a comment-to-DM automation to a trial reel that says "comment GUIDE". The DM logs show how many strangers asked for it, before the reel is shown to the people most likely to buy.
Trial reels by plan
Every plan can post trial reels. The free plan has a monthly allowance of 3, which resets each month; the paid plans have no cap.

Frequently asked questions
What are Instagram trial reels?
Reels that Instagram shows to non-followers first. They don't appear on your profile or to your followers until they are shared to them, either by you or automatically by Instagram if they perform well.
Can I schedule trial reels?
Yes. Switch on "Post as trial reel" in the ReelDrop composer and schedule the reel as usual, or publish it straight away. It goes out through the official Instagram API.
How many trial reels do I get for free?
The free Starter plan includes 3 trial reels a month. Influencer and Creator are unlimited.
Can ReelDrop share my trial reel to followers for me?
No. Instagram's API doesn't let any app share a trial reel to followers. Pick "Let Instagram decide" if you want it to happen automatically, or "I'll decide" and share it yourself in the Instagram app. ReelDrop links you straight to the reel.
Why can't I post a trial reel?
Instagram only enables trial reels for eligible professional accounts. If yours isn't enabled, ReelDrop shows "Instagram hasn't enabled trial reels for this account yet." Post it as a regular reel and try again later. On the free plan you may also have used this month's allowance.
How do I know if my trial reel was shared to followers?
Instagram doesn't say. ReelDrop watches the reach curve for 7 days and flags a reach jump of 50% or more between two samples as "likely shared to followers".
Do DM automations work on trial reels?
Yes. Attach a comment-to-DM automation while scheduling and it fires on comments from non-followers too.
