Instagram for Canadian small businesses
Updated: September 2026
ReelDrop helps Canadian small businesses turn Instagram comments into bookings. Someone comments a keyword like BOOK or MENU and gets your link by DM within moments, and you schedule the month's posts in your own time zone. It's Canadian-owned, free for one account, and every DM it sends answers something the customer did first.
What ReelDrop does for Canadian small businesses
For a local business, Instagram's job is to catch the customer who is deciding right now: the booking link, the menu, the class schedule. Comment-to-DM does that without you at the counter. The customer comments a keyword on your post and the link arrives in their DMs, whether you're open or not. Because a DM that promotes your business can be a commercial electronic message under Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL), the DM should stick to what the person asked for and say who it's from. ReelDrop sends it through the official Instagram API. You write the message.
The problems this solves
- Customers ask for the booking link in the comments on a Friday night and book elsewhere by Monday.
- You post when you remember, and never at the hour your neighbourhood is scrolling.
- You've heard CASL fines are huge and don't know whether auto-DMs count.
- An agency retainer costs more than your monthly marketing budget.
- Your customers are in one time zone, and every posting guide is written for another.
Comment-to-DM as local lead generation
Pick the question your comments repeat most, turn it into a keyword, and attach an automation to the posts where it keeps landing. Four examples of how that looks across the country:
- A café in Toronto's Leslieville: MENU. The DM sends this week's menu.
- A salon in Calgary's Kensington: BOOK. The DM sends the booking page.
- A fitness studio in Ottawa's Westboro: TRIAL. The DM sends the link to book a first class.
- A realtor with listings in Halifax's North End: TOUR. The DM sends the open-house schedule.
What CASL means for your automated DMs
The CRTC, the federal regulator that enforces CASL, says DMs sent through a closed, two-way messaging system go to "electronic addresses", so a commercial Instagram DM can fall under CASL. A message sent in response to a request or inquiry is excluded from CASL's consent, identification and unsubscribe rules (Electronic Commerce Protection Regulations, SOR/2013-221, s.3(b)). Whether a keyword comment counts as a request hasn't been confirmed by any regulator. So keep the DM on the thing they asked for, name your business, give a way to reach you, and offer an opt-out. Sending promotions to people who didn't ask needs their consent, and ReelDrop can't send broadcasts anyway. This is general information, not legal advice.
The full guide covers consent, the inquiry exclusion, identification and unsubscribe rules, and penalties, with the sources.

Local customers mean local time. The Leslieville café posts its lunch special by 10:30 a.m. ET, before people decide where to eat. The Kensington salon posts weekend openings on Thursday evening MT, when people plan their Saturday.
A boutique on Main Street in Vancouver's Mount Pleasant has one extra thing to check. B.C. stays on daylight time from November 1, 2026, so its clocks don't fall back. Check that posts scheduled after that date show the time you expect.
If you sell to customers in other provinces, remember that Halifax is 1 hour ahead of Toronto, and St. John's 1.5 hours. ReelDrop schedules in the time zone set in your account settings, so set it to your own zone once and every slot you pick is local time.
What the free plan covers
The Starter plan is free for one Instagram account, with no card: unlimited scheduling and posting, reels and carousels, 5 DM automations, and 3 AI captions a month.
The Influencer plan, at US$9.99 a month or US$79 a year, adds story-reply and DM-keyword triggers, for customers who reply to a story or message you instead of commenting. Paid plans bill in US dollars.
An automation recipe for Canadian small businesses
The name, address and phone line is the identification CASL asks of a commercial message. The regulations allow those details on a linked page if they don't fit, but for a local business they're useful in the DM itself. The STOP line is an easy opt-out. It may not be strictly required for a reply to a request, but it costs one line. Any reply cancels the pending follow-up, so keep the follow-up about the same booking ("Still want a Saturday spot?"), not a new promotion. There's no follow gate, because a customer asking to book shouldn't have to follow you first.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need consent to auto-DM someone under CASL?
Not always. CASL generally requires consent before you send a commercial electronic message, including an Instagram DM. But a message sent in response to a request or inquiry is excluded from CASL's consent, identification and unsubscribe rules. No regulator has confirmed that commenting a keyword counts as a request, so keep the DM to what the person asked for, name your business and offer an opt-out. This is general information, not legal advice.
Can I send Instagram DM promotions to past customers in Canada?
Only with their consent, and not with ReelDrop. Under CASL a promotional message to someone who didn't ask for it needs express or implied consent. Implied consent runs out after a set period, six months after an inquiry, for example, and past purchases are a separate case with their own time limit. ReelDrop only replies to people who comment, reply to a story or message you first. It has no broadcast or bulk-DM feature.
What time should a Canadian small business post on Instagram?
Post in your customers' local time, shortly before they decide: a lunch special by mid-morning, weekend bookings on Thursday evening. Buffer's 2026 data puts the strongest general windows at Wednesday noon, Wednesday 6 p.m. and Thursday 9 a.m. local time. Then check your own Instagram insights for when your followers are active.
Is ReelDrop free for a small business in Canada?
Yes, for one Instagram account. The Starter plan is free with no card: unlimited scheduling and posting, reels and carousels, 5 DM automations, and 3 AI captions a month. Paid plans are billed in US dollars. ReelDrop is owned and operated by 10517933 Canada Ltd., a Canadian corporation based in Toronto, Ontario.
Can an automated Instagram DM include my address and phone number?
Yes. You write the DM, so you can include your business name, street address and phone number or website. For a Canadian business that's also sensible under CASL, which asks commercial messages to identify the sender and give a way to get in touch. The details can sit on a linked web page if they don't fit in the message.
