How to add a link to an Instagram Reel

Updated:

A link on the Reel itself comes from a paid Meta plan: Meta One Advanced and up, or the Meta Verified Plus, Premium and Max plans that are still on sale. Everything else is a workaround. The workaround I use sends the link by DM to everyone who comments a keyword, and ReelDrop's free plan covers 5 of those automations.

Meta's Add link and a DM link, side by side

Meta's Add link, on Meta One Advanced and up, puts a clickable link on your post or Reel. Meta's help article says "People can visit the website from your post or reel" and does not describe how the link looks. Comment-to-DM asks the viewer to comment a word first, and ReelDrop sends the DM when the comment lands. Meta charges per profile and caps the links, while the DM route asks more of the viewer.

ReelDrop is my company, and it does the second one. The Meta Verified Plus, Premium and Max plans also list 2, 4 or 6 links in Reels a month; the steps below come from Meta One's help article.

How to add a link to a Reel with Meta One

You need an active Meta One Advanced, Expert or Max subscription on the profile, and the Instagram account has to be public. Meta says teens can't use the feature. Essential ($14.99) does not include links in posts or Reels, only a link page in your bio.

As of API v26.0, Instagram's content publishing API has no field for a link on a post or reel, so no scheduling tool, ReelDrop included, can add Meta One's Add link for you. It has to be done in the Instagram app when you post. These are the steps from Meta's help article, in order.

  1. Create your Reel in the Instagram app the way you normally would.
  2. Write a caption. Meta lists the caption as required for adding a link.
  3. Tap Add link. The option carries a Meta One label and your remaining count, for example "Meta One · 4 links left".
  4. Paste the URL.
  5. Tap Done.
  6. Share the Reel. Check the URL before you do, because you can't edit a link after the Reel is shared.

How the Meta One allowance works

Posts and Reels have separate allowances. On Advanced that means 4 posts and 4 Reels, and you cannot move a spare post link over to a Reel. The count resets on the date your subscription renews, and unused links don't carry over.

Some links don't use up the allowance. Links to Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Threads are exempt, and so are product links, including affiliate links, from a commerce catalog your business already runs on Meta. Links in ads don't count either.

If you use all 4 Reel links every month, Advanced works out to about $12.50 per linked Reel (our calculation, from Meta's US price). The Advanced review has the per-link math for every tier.

How to send a Reel link by DM with ReelDrop

ReelDrop cannot put a link inside a Reel, including Reels it publishes for you. When someone comments your keyword, ReelDrop replies to the comment in public and sends the DM when the comment lands, through the official Instagram API. Whether the DM gets seen depends on the commenter's message settings. ReelDrop is a Meta Tech Provider, and it needs an Instagram professional account (Business or Creator).

The free plan includes 5 comment-to-DM automations, comment trigger, one account, no card. On the free plan you attach an automation to the Reels you pick; the 'all Reels and posts' target that covers everything you publish is on the paid plans. Unlimited automations start on Influencer.

  1. Connect your Instagram Business or Creator account. You log in through Meta's own screen, so ReelDrop never sees your password.
  2. Schedule the Reel in the ReelDrop composer and attach an automation while you pick the time slot, or point an automation at a Reel that is already live from the grid of your recent media.
  3. Set the trigger keyword, for example LINK. The Contains match mode catches "send me the link" as well as the bare word.
  4. Write the DM and put your URL on a link button. You can add up to three buttons, and a live phone preview shows what the commenter will see.
  5. Publish. End the caption or the video with the ask ("comment LINK and I'll send it"), and make sure that word matches the keyword in the automation.

The free plan includes five comment-to-DM automations on one account and does not ask for a card.

Why the link option is not showing on your Reel

These come from Meta's help articles, plus two that follow from them.

  • You are not on Advanced, Expert or Max. Essential, the personal bundles and Instagram Plus do not include links in Reels.
  • The account belongs to a teen. Meta says teens can't use Add link.
  • The account is private. Meta's article covers eligible public accounts, so a private account should not expect the option.
  • There is no caption yet. Meta lists the caption as required.
  • You have used this month's Reel links. The count resets on your renewal date, and spare post links cannot be used on Reels.
  • Meta One is not live for you yet. The newsroom post says Meta One is available globally, but Meta's help center still says it "is currently in limited testing and isn't available everywhere yet", and pricing and features may vary by region.
  • You are trying to add a link to a Reel you already shared. Meta's article describes adding the link while you create the Reel and says links can't be edited after sharing, so plan the link before you post.

How to add a WhatsApp link to an Instagram Reel

Here the Meta One cap mostly stops mattering. Links to WhatsApp don't count toward the monthly allowance, so on Advanced or above a WhatsApp chat link on your Reels costs nothing extra.

Without Meta One, send the WhatsApp link by DM when someone comments, or keep it in your bio. A WhatsApp link typed into a caption is plain text.

How to add a YouTube link to an Instagram Reel

YouTube is not a Meta app, so on Meta One a YouTube link uses one of your Reel links for the month. Four a month covers your big uploads and runs out fast if you trail every video with several Reels.

Comment-to-DM suits YouTube because the viewer has already said they want the video: "comment FULL and I'll send you the full version".

How to add a website link to an Instagram Reel

Same rules as YouTube. A link to your own site, shop, newsletter or booking page counts toward the Meta One allowance, and you cannot swap it later. If the offer on that page ends while the Reel is still getting views, the link keeps pointing at the old page.

If your offers change often, I would send website links by DM, where you can swap the URL any time.

Affiliate links in Reels

Product links, including affiliate links, from a business's existing commerce catalog on Meta do not count toward the limit. An affiliate link from anywhere else, such as a retailer's own affiliate program, uses one of your monthly Reel links (our reading of Meta's help article). Meta also points out that Add link is different from Add products, which tags items from a catalog.

Meta One figures from Meta's help center, checked 16 September 2026. ReelDrop figures from reeldrop.io/pricing. Bio links, Stories and captions work the same for any account.

  1. Comment-to-DM costs nothing on ReelDrop's free plan: 5 comment-to-DM automations, comment trigger, one account, no card. Unlimited automations start on Influencer at $9.99 a month, and you can change the link in the DM any time.
  2. A link in your bio is free and tappable, and it serves every Reel you have posted. Instagram lets you add several links in your bio, but the viewer has to leave the Reel and open your profile to find them.
  3. Link stickers only exist in Stories. Share the Reel to your Story and add the sticker there; it reaches people who watch your Stories and is gone after 24 hours.
  4. A URL typed into the caption or a pinned comment is free and not tappable. It only makes sense for a short address people can type from memory.
  5. Meta One Essential's link page costs $14.99 a month per profile and holds up to 20 links in your bio. Essential does not include links in posts or Reels.
  6. Add link on Meta One Advanced ($49.99), Expert ($149) or Max ($499) covers 4, 8 or 12 Reels a month, plus the same number of posts. Meta Verified Plus ($49.99), Premium ($149.99) and Max ($499.99) list 2, 4 or 6 links in Reels a month.
  7. A boosted Reel or ad costs whatever you spend, and Meta says links in ads don't count toward the Meta One limit. The link lives in the ad, so people who find the organic Reel on their own don't get it.

Which one I would pick

If you already wanted the option to apply for a verified badge, subject to eligibility, and shared access for a small team, Meta One Advanced is a fair deal and the 4 Reel links come with it. Use them on your best Reels and send everything else by DM.

If links are the only reason you were looking at Meta One, I would not pay $49.99 a month for four of them. Put a comment keyword on your Reels, attach each new Reel to one of your automations, and keep your bio link for people who find your profile on their own.

Running both works, with one catch. A Reel with Meta's Add link has to be posted from the Instagram app, so it cannot be scheduled through ReelDrop or any API tool. Post it in the app, then attach the automation to the live Reel from the media grid.

Frequently asked questions

Can a link be added to a reel?

Yes, on a paid Meta plan. Meta One Advanced, Expert and Max include Add link for 4, 8 or 12 Reels a month, and Meta Verified Plus, Premium and Max list 2, 4 or 6 links in Reels. Without a paid plan, send the link by DM when someone comments a keyword, or use your bio link.

Why is the link option not showing on Instagram reels?

Usually the profile is not on Meta One Advanced or higher, the account is private or belongs to a teen, there is no caption yet, or this month's Reel links are used up. Meta's help center also says Meta One is still in limited testing and not available everywhere.

How do I add links to my Instagram Reels that are meta-verified?

It depends on the plan. Meta Verified Plus ($49.99) lists 2 links in Reels per month, Premium 4 and Max 6, while Standard does not include them. Meta says nothing changes for current Meta Verified subscribers right now and it will notify them when they can make the switch to Meta One, where Advanced lists 4 Reel links and 4 post links at the same $49.99.

How do you make a clickable link on Instagram?

Clickable links on Instagram live in your bio, in Story link stickers, in DMs, in ads, and on posts and Reels for accounts on a Meta plan that includes links (Meta One Advanced and up, or Meta Verified Plus and up). A URL typed into a caption or a comment is not clickable.

Can you put a link sticker on an Instagram Reel?

No. Link stickers only exist in Stories. You can share the Reel to your Story and add a link sticker there.

Can I edit a link after I share the Reel?

Not with Meta One. Meta's help article says you can't edit links after you share your post or reel. With comment-to-DM you can change the link in the automation at any time and the next DM uses the new one.

Do unused Meta One links roll over?

No. The allowance resets on the date your subscription renews, and unused links don't carry over. Posts and Reels are counted separately too.

Do links in ads count toward the Meta One link limit?

No. Meta's help center lists links in ads as exempt, along with links to Meta apps and product links from a commerce catalog on Meta.

Can ReelDrop add a Meta One link to my Reel for me?

No. As of API v26.0, Instagram's content publishing API has no field for a link on a post or reel, so no scheduling tool, ReelDrop included, can add Meta One's Add link for you. It has to be done in the Instagram app when you post. After that you can point a ReelDrop automation at the live Reel for everyone who comments.

Will adding a link to my Reel hurt its reach?

Nothing in Meta's Meta One articles says so either way. The older claim that Instagram punishes link stickers has never been confirmed by Meta, which our Instagram algorithm guide covers.
