Connect Cursor to ReelDrop

Add ReelDrop to Cursor's `mcp.json` with the server URL, save, and sign in with your ReelDrop account when Cursor asks. There is no API key or client ID to fill in. The agent can then schedule reels, edit the queue and answer analytics questions from the chat.

Before you start

  • An Influencer or Creator plan on ReelDrop. On the free Starter plan the connection succeeds but every tool answers with an upgrade prompt.
  • A ReelDrop workspace with an Instagram account connected.
  • The Cursor desktop app.
  1. Step 1: Add the server to mcp.json

    Open Customize → MCPs in the sidebar and open the MCP config, or edit the file directly. ~/.cursor/mcp.json makes ReelDrop available in every project; .cursor/mcp.json inside a project limits it to that project, and wins if both name the same server.

    ~/.cursor/mcp.json

    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "reeldrop": {
          "url": "https://mcp.reeldrop.io/mcp"
        }
      }
    }
  2. Step 2: Sign in with your ReelDrop account

    Save the file. Cursor finds that the server needs a sign-in and offers to connect next to reeldrop in the MCPs list. Click it, log in to ReelDrop in the browser window that opens and approve. Cursor registers itself automatically, so leave out any auth block in the config.

    If nothing changes after saving, restart Cursor.

  3. Step 3: Check the tools loaded

    reeldrop lists its tools under Available Tools in the MCPs list, and they appear in the tools list at the top of the agent chat. If it stays disconnected, open the Output panel and choose MCP Logs.

  4. Step 4: Run the first-run checklist

    Ask these four things in a new chat. All of them only read, so nothing changes on your account, and each answer proves a different part of the connection works:

    • "List my ReelDrop workspaces." Your real workspace names come back, not a guess.
    • "Which Instagram account is connected to that workspace, and is the connection healthy?"
    • "How much of my plan have I used this month?" On the free Starter plan, this is where the upgrade reply shows up instead.
    • "When is my next open posting slot?" If no posting schedule is saved yet, it asks for your timezone once and saves it to the workspace.

If it asks for an API key

Cursor should never ask you for an API key, a client ID or a bearer token for ReelDrop. If it does, it is pointed at the wrong address: check that the URL is exactly https://mcp.reeldrop.io/mcp, with /mcp on the end. The only client that uses a token is Meta Muse, because it has no browser to sign in with.

Disconnect

In Customize → MCPs, toggle reeldrop off or remove it, or delete its entry from mcp.json. Reconnecting means approving the sign-in in the browser again. Posts already scheduled keep publishing.

ReelDrop is also listed on Smithery and in the official MCP registry as io.reeldrop/reeldrop, so clients that browse either can find the server without you pasting the URL.

Frequently asked questions

Should the server go in the global or the project mcp.json?

Global, unless a project needs its own setup. ReelDrop acts as your account in every project either way, and a project file in a shared repository would pass the server to everyone who opens it (they would still have to sign in as themselves).

Does Cursor need a paid plan for MCP?

Cursor does not list MCP as a paid feature. ReelDrop does: Influencer or Creator.

Can the agent upload a video from my project folder?

Yes. Ask it to schedule a local file and it requests an upload link from ReelDrop and sends the file there before scheduling.
