Later vs Planoly (2026): Which Instagram Planner Wins?
Later vs Planoly on 2026 pricing, free plans, post limits and Instagram publishing. Both pricing pages rechecked in September.
Which one should you actually pay for? Planoly, if the bill decides it: $14 a month billed annually against Later's $18.75, with unlimited uploads instead of a post cap. Later, if you publish to six or seven networks at volume and want the more mature calendar. Neither has a free desktop plan.

Later vs Planoly at a glance
These two have been compared for about a decade, because they arrived at the same idea at the same time: a grid you can drag photos around in before you commit anything to Instagram. In 2026 they have drifted. Later grew into a general social suite with eight networks and per-profile post quotas. Planoly stayed cheaper, kept uploads uncapped, and added Instagram DM automation to every paid tier. We opened both pricing pages in September 2026 and wrote down what they say now.

Pricing compared
Later publishes three tiers. Starter is $18.75 a month billed yearly, sold as $225 for the year with three months free. Growth is $37.50 a month, or $450 a year, and adds a second social set, a second user and 180 posts per profile. Scale is $82.50 a month, $990 a year, for six sets and four users. One quirk: Later's page only renders the yearly figures. The month to month rate sits behind a toggle that does not appear in the page source, so we are not quoting a number for it.
Planoly publishes three tiers as well and shows both billing modes. Starter is $14 a month annually or $16 month to month, Growth is $24 or $28, and Pro is $47 or $55. Growth and Pro also sell extra capacity by the piece: $10 a month for another social set on Growth, $8 on Pro, and $5 or $3 for another user. Both companies run a 14-day trial on every paid plan.
Headline prices are a bad way to compare these two, because a "social set" is not the same unit in both products. Later's set is one profile on each of eight networks. Planoly's set is one account per platform across nine, including Amazon and X, which Later does not carry, and excluding Snapchat, which it does. So here is the same money divided by the thing you are actually buying.
| Plan | Yearly cost | Social sets | Cost per set per year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Later Starter | $225 | 1 | $225 |
| Later Growth | $450 | 2 | $225 |
| Later Scale | $990 | 6 | $165 |
| Planoly Starter | $168 | 1 | $168 |
| Planoly Growth | $288 | 2 | $144 |
| Planoly Pro | $564 | 6 | $94 |
Annual-billing rates from each vendor's pricing page, multiplied by twelve.
Planoly is cheaper at every tier, and the gap widens as you go up. At entry level it is $57 a year. At six sets it is $426, and Planoly gives you six seats there against Later's four. If your decision is purely financial, this table is the whole article.
The post limit that catches people out
Almost nobody reads the post quota before subscribing, and on Later it decides whether the cheap plan works for you.
Later's own FAQ is unusually clear about it. Your post count is the number of scheduled posts you can create per month per social profile, not per social set, and it includes Reels, Stories and carousels. Posts count when you schedule them, not when they publish. On Starter that is 30 per profile per month.
Do the arithmetic on a normal creator month. One Instagram post a day is 30. That is the entire allowance, and you have not scheduled a single Story yet. Add three Stories a week and you need 42. Add a Reel on top of the daily post twice a week and you are at 50. Starter covers roughly half of what a creator posting daily to one account actually schedules, so the honest entry price for that person is Growth at $37.50 a month, not $18.75. That is $450 a year against Planoly's $168 for a workload Planoly does not meter at all.
Because posts are counted at schedule time, drafting loosely and rearranging later eats the quota faster than the number suggests. Planoly sells unlimited uploads on every paid tier with no published monthly ceiling, which removes the question. To sanity check your own volume first, our free content frequency planner gives you a monthly number in about a minute.
Where Later wins
Breadth, and it is not close. Eight networks including Snapchat, and Later documents Auto Publish working on all of them. If your content really goes out to Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, LinkedIn and YouTube, one calendar covering all five is worth paying for, and Planoly's cheaper sets stop being a saving the moment you run a second tool alongside them.
Later is also the more explicit product about how it connects. Its help centre states plainly that Later is an official Instagram partner and follows Instagram's platform requirements, and it publishes the API constraints it inherits: carousels capped at 10 items, one caption for the whole carousel, and native features like trending audio and stickers requiring you to finish the post in the Instagram app. Vendors who write that down are usually the ones who have tested it. Most tools leave you to find out on a live post.
The AI credits are at least a defined quantity. Later says one credit generates three ideas or one caption, with 5 a month on Starter and 50 on Growth. Five captions is thin, but countable. Planoly advertises caption suggestions and content ideas without publishing any allowance, so you find the ceiling by hitting it.
The honest cost: Later prices like a small business tool now, and the grid preview that made its name is no longer the centre of the product. If that grid is why you are here, read our Later alternatives page first. Cheaper tools do the visual part just as well.
Where Planoly wins
Price, uncapped posting, and one feature Later does not have. Every Planoly tier, including the $14 Starter, includes Instagram DM automation. Later sells scheduling and analytics and stops there. For a creator whose reels end with "comment LINK and I'll send it," that is the difference between one subscription and two, and the second one usually costs more than the planner.
Planoly also kept a free tier alive when Later did not. It is limited, 10 uploads a month and mobile app only, so it is closer to a trial than a plan you run a business on. Still, it lets you feel the calendar before you hand over a card. Later gives you 14 days and then a bill.
Link in bio is included on every tier rather than sold separately, and digital products and merch selling sit inside the same plans. Whether that matters depends entirely on whether you sell anything. Plenty of creators never open it, and Planoly's plan pages do oversell it.
Where Planoly is weaker: analytics depth and documentation. Its help pages explain how to link an account and toggle auto-post but never say which API it uses or what its partner status is. That is not evidence of anything bad, just less than Later tells you, and for a tool holding a publishing token on your account, more disclosure is better. Same trade-offs on our Planoly alternatives page.
How each one publishes to Instagram
Both publish through Instagram's official API, and both therefore require an Instagram business or creator account. Later says so directly: due to API changes, personal profile connections are no longer supported. Planoly says the same thing in different words, that you must have an Instagram Business or Creator account to link one, and it routes advanced tagging through a connected Facebook Business Page, which is how Graph API authentication works. Planoly never names the API on that page. The behaviour gives it away.
This matters more than any feature on either pricing page. Tools that ask for your Instagram password instead of sending you to Instagram's own login screen are simulating a phone in a data centre, and Instagram cannot tell that apart from a stolen account. Neither of these does that. Both are on the safe side of the line.
Two differences in what the API lets each one do. Planoly can auto-post Stories, but only from its Instagram planner, and it says creator accounts are not eligible for that yet. Later counts Stories against your monthly post quota. Both inherit Meta's ceiling of 100 API-published posts within a 24-hour moving period, which no scheduler can raise.
Which should you choose
One Instagram account, posting most days: Planoly. Unlimited uploads against 30 removes the only real constraint, and you save $57 a year while getting DM automation thrown in.
Five or more networks, posting to all of them properly: Later. The extra $57 buys Snapchat, a defined AI allowance and a publishing engine whose limitations are written down. Budget for Growth, not Starter.
A small team sharing a calendar: Planoly Pro gives six users and six sets for $564 a year. Later Scale gives four users and six sets for $990. That is not a close call unless you need Snapchat.
Testing whether you like planning visually at all: Planoly's free mobile tier. Ten uploads is enough to decide, and it costs nothing to abandon.
Mostly reels, and you want the AI writing and the DM automation in the same tab: neither of these, honestly. Both are planners first. We compared the whole category in our Instagram scheduler roundup, and if the grid preview is the specific thing you came for, the grid planner comparison is the narrower read.
Where ReelDrop fits
We make ReelDrop, so treat this as disclosure rather than a recommendation. ReelDrop is Instagram only and younger than both of these, with no team or multi-account features until Studio ships, so if you need one calendar across seven networks it is the wrong tool and Later is the right one. Where it lands differently is the free tier: unlimited scheduling and posting on one account at $0, plus DM automation on reels, which is the combination neither Later nor Planoly offers for free. The side-by-side detail is on ReelDrop vs Later and ReelDrop vs Planoly, and the tiers are on our pricing page.
Frequently asked questions
Is Planoly cheaper than Later?
Yes, at every tier. Planoly's Starter is $14 a month billed annually against Later's $18.75, and Planoly's Growth is $24 against Later's $37.50. Over a year that is $168 versus $225 at entry level. Planoly also keeps a free mobile tier with 10 uploads a month.
Does Later still have a free plan?
No. Later runs a 14-day free trial on every paid plan and nothing beyond that. The cheapest way in is Starter at $18.75 a month billed yearly, which works out at $225 up front. If you want a free tier from a visual planner, Planoly's mobile app is the closer option.
Can Planoly auto-post Reels?
Yes, from the multi-channel workspace, alongside grid posts. Stories auto-post too, but only from the Instagram planner and not from creator accounts, which Planoly says are not eligible. You need an Instagram business or creator account either way. Personal profiles get reminder posting only.
How many posts does Later's Starter plan allow?
Thirty scheduled posts per social profile per month. Later counts a post when you schedule it, not when it publishes, and Stories, Reels and carousels all count. One Instagram post a day uses the whole allowance before you have scheduled a single Story.
Which is better for one Instagram account?
Planoly, on the numbers. You get unlimited uploads instead of 30 scheduled posts, Instagram DM automation on the same plan, and a lower bill. Later is the better buy once you are genuinely publishing to five or six networks and want one calendar covering all of them.
Do both tools publish through Instagram's official API?
Later says so directly and calls itself an official Instagram partner. Planoly does not use that language in its help docs, but it requires a business or creator account and authenticates through Facebook, which is how the Graph API works. Neither asks for your Instagram password.
What do you lose by switching from Later to Planoly?
Snapchat, mainly, since Planoly does not list it as a channel. You also give up Later's published AI credit allowance, which is 5 generations a month on Starter and a number Planoly does not print at all. What you gain is unlimited uploads, DM automation on every tier, and $57 a year.
