Instagram Shadowban in 2026: How to Check and Fix It

Is your Instagram shadowbanned? Instagram doesn't use that word, but it does make posts and accounts "not eligible to be recommended," which cuts your reach to non-followers while your followers still see you. Check Account Status in Settings first, then look for a collapsing non-follower share in Insights. Most limits lift once you remove the cause.

Updated: October 2026

TLDR

  • "Shadowban" is a creator term. Meta's term is "not eligible to be recommended," and it only affects reach to people who don't follow you.
  • Account Status (Settings, then Account, then Account Status) is the only check that comes from Instagram itself. Start there.
  • Usual 2026 causes: Recommendation Guidelines violations, reposted content, password-based growth apps, bought engagement, restricted hashtags.
  • Meta publishes no duration. Creator reports put most limits at a few days to a few weeks after the cause is gone.
  • Official-API scheduling doesn't cause shadowbans. Password-based apps do.

Quick answers

  • Is the shadowban real? Yes, as reduced recommendation eligibility. Instagram confirms that part in writing.
  • Fastest check? Account Status in the app. It lists removed content and whether you can be recommended.
  • How long does it last? No official number. Creators report days for one bad hashtag, weeks for automation.
  • Free test? ReelDrop's shadowban checker runs an 8-point symptom check with no login.

Is the Instagram shadowban real

Instagram's line in 2018, as Later's timeline of its statements records it, was that shadow banning is not a real thing. A year later its help center admitted that Explore and hashtag pages are held to a stricter standard than your profile, so a post can be allowed on Instagram and still be kept out of those surfaces. That second statement is the whole shadowban in one sentence. Since then Instagram has mostly added a name and a dashboard.

The dashboard is Account Status. Instagram launched it in October 2021 and has extended it several times. In December 2022 it started telling professional accounts whether their content could be recommended to non-followers in Explore, Reels and feed recommendations (TechCrunch covered the launch). Search and Suggested Accounts followed in April 2023, feature restrictions in June 2023, and in October 2025 a notice for accounts hidden from teens under 18.

Adam Mosseri, who runs Instagram, has spent years trying to retire the word. In 2023 he said the term means different things to different people and that Instagram does not suppress reach to sell ads (Gizmodo). In a February 2025 reel he put it more narrowly: "In connected ranking, we do not limit reach." Connected ranking means your followers. The statement says nothing about non-follower surfaces, which is exactly where creators feel the shadowban.

What Meta says vs what creators report

Put the official statements next to the recurring creator claims and they disagree less than you would think. Most arguments come from people talking about different surfaces (followers vs everyone else).

How do you check if you're shadowbanned

Skip sites that take your username and return a red or green light. Instagram has no public restriction flag, so they mostly check whether your profile loads. These five checks take about fifteen minutes.

  1. Open Account Status. Go to your profile, tap the menu, then Settings, Account, and Account Status. Look for removed content, any note that your content or account can't be recommended, restricted features, or a note that you're hidden from teens. Each item can be edited or sent for review.
  2. Compare your non-follower reach. In Insights, compare reach for the last 14 days to the 14 before, then open a few recent posts and check the followers vs non-followers split. A limit shows up as the non-follower share falling toward zero while follower reach barely moves.
  3. Run a hashtag test from another account. Post with a few small, niche tags, then search one from an account that doesn't follow you (a friend's, or logged out). Your own account always sees your post, so it proves nothing.
  4. Audit connected apps. In Settings, find Apps and websites and remove anything you don't recognize, anything that auto-likes or auto-follows, and anything you gave your password to.
  5. Rule out a normal bad week. Compare your last five posts on format, hook, and posting time. A weak reel and a real limit look alike on a reach chart, but only a limit kills non-follower reach across every format.

If you want those checks scored in one pass, ReelDrop's free shadowban checker walks through eight symptom questions and scans a pasted caption for restricted tags. It never asks for your login

What gets accounts limited in 2026

Content that breaks the Recommendation Guidelines is the most common documented cause. These guidelines are stricter than the Community Guidelines, so a post can be fine on your grid and still be ineligible for Explore or Reels.

Unoriginal content moved up the list this year. On April 30, 2026, Instagram extended its anti-repost rule from reels to photos and carousels: accounts that mostly repost other people's work without meaningfully changing it stop being recommended to new people, while followers still see them (Tubefilter).

Fake engagement and automation are the old reliables. Instagram announced in 2018 that it removes likes, follows and comments generated by third-party growth apps and warns affected users. Engagement pods, bought followers, and follow/unfollow bursts all produce patterns its systems read as inauthentic. For the pacing side of this, our action blocked guide covers the reported limits.

Instagram capped captions at five hashtags in December 2025 (Social Media Today). Restricted or broken tags still exist. Creators widely report that one bad tag hides the whole post from every hashtag page, though Instagram hasn't confirmed that mechanism. Run your usual set through the hashtag density checker before assuming the worst.

Reports and removals round it out. A single removal usually means a warning. Repeated removals of the same kind are what tip an account into non-recommendable, and if they keep stacking, into suspension, which our account suspended guide covers.

How do you fix a shadowban

Match the fix to the cause you found.

  1. Fix or appeal what Account Status lists. Edit or delete flagged posts. If a flag is wrong, request a review from the same screen, once, and keep a screenshot.
  2. Cut off password-based apps. Remove them under Apps and websites, then change your password so any stored session dies. Instagram's own 2018 guidance prompted exactly this.
  3. Clean up your hashtags. Drop any restricted tag from recent captions (creators report an edit is enough) and stay at five or fewer.
  4. Stop the bursts. No mass follows, likes, or copy-pasted comments while you recover. Use the app the way a person does.
  5. Post original work. If you repost, change it meaningfully: your own commentary, edit, or voiceover. Credit screenshots and speed changes don't count.
  6. Keep posting at your normal pace. Advice conflicts here. Later's guide passes on creator reports that a few days off helped. ReelDrop's checker page argues that going quiet slows recovery because the system has nothing new to evaluate. Neither side has hard data, so we'd skip the long break and keep a steady, clean cadence.

How long does a shadowban last

Meta publishes no number. Everything else is creator reporting. Later's guide says limits are rumored to lift within two to three weeks, with outliers running a month or more. Recovery guides describe a rough pattern: a restricted hashtag on one post clears in days once you edit it out, action bursts take a week or two, and automation apps take several weeks after you revoke them.

Formal notices in Account Status are different, because they're tied to specific content. Removing the post or winning the review is what clears them. Waiting alone may not.

Still stuck after four weeks with a clean Account Status? Use Settings, Help, Report a problem, and list what you've ruled out.

Can a scheduling tool get you shadowbanned

Not if it publishes through the official Instagram API. That route is sanctioned by Meta, runs on permissions you grant on instagram.com, and is rate limited by Meta itself at 100 API-published posts per 24 hours. The tools that cause trouble are the ones that ask for your password and act inside a browser session, liking and following on your behalf. Instagram reads that as a bot, because it is one.

ReelDrop is our product, so weigh this accordingly. It's a Meta Tech Provider that publishes through the Graph API and requests five scoped permissions, and it never sees your password. The full list of what it can access is on the is ReelDrop safe page. Its DM automation has its own pacing rules, documented in DM send limits and account safety. Our safest Instagram tools roundup compares eight of them.

Frequently asked questions

Does Instagram tell you when you're shadowbanned?

Sometimes. Account Status shows whether your content and account can be recommended, plus removed posts and restricted features. Softer limits, like throttling after a burst of follows or likes, often leave Account Status clean. So a clean screen doesn't prove you're fine, but a warning there is the closest thing to confirmation Instagram gives.

Can too many hashtags get you shadowbanned?

Instagram now caps captions at five hashtags, so heavy tag stuffing is mostly off the table. The bigger risk is a single restricted or broken tag. Creators report that one can keep a post off every hashtag page, though Instagram hasn't confirmed it. Keep a small, relevant set and remove any tag that looks spammy.

Why is my reach down if Account Status looks fine?

Account Status lists formal actions, so it misses soft limits and plain content problems. A weaker hook, a new format, posting at a different time, or a platform outage can all drop reach. Check whether the non-follower share fell across several posts. If it did, look at hashtags, apps, and recent activity bursts.

Does deleting and reposting fix a shadowban?

Deleting a post that broke the Recommendation Guidelines or used a restricted tag can help. Deleting and reposting the same content usually doesn't, and reposting in bulk can look spammy. Mass-deleting your grid is a bad idea too. Fix the specific cause, edit captions where you can, and keep posting new original work.

Do scheduling apps cause Instagram shadowbans?

Apps that publish through Meta's official Instagram API do not, because Meta approved that route and limits it itself. The risk comes from tools that take your password and automate actions in a browser session, like auto-likers and follow/unfollow services. If a tool asks for your Instagram password, disconnect it and change the password.

What's the difference between a shadowban and an action block?

An action block is visible. Instagram shows a message saying you can't follow, like, or comment for a while. A shadowban is silent and changes who sees your posts, not what you can do. Action blocks often arrive first, which makes them a useful early warning that your activity pattern looks automated.
